Sammie the Shark
This project started when I was staying in St Maarten.
It was designed to be a 3D printed for a floating key fob.
The first version of it was printed on the 3D printer from a local IT and print shop.
Sharks everywhere
While St Maarten might not be a prime location for diving, it still has some quite nice dive sites, and (at the time) a good chance to see nurse sharks.
I was working as a diving instructor at the time and wanted to use my creative and engineering skills to create some 3D models for tourists to purchase.
I started looking at reference images for inspiration, and found a couple of nice images from cartoon sharks.
I would credit the original concept artist if I knew who he or she was. If anyone knows, please feel free to post a comment or leave me a message and I’ll credit the concept author.
Good old box modeling
After settling on a concept, I started with good old box modeling to define the main shapes and volumes.
From the box model I started sculpting the more detailed version of the shark.
After the sculpture was finished I started the retopology proces.
Like a fish in the water
Once the retopology process was finished I made a version that was suitable for 3D printing.
I took this model to a local IT store with a printer, to get the first version printed.
This 3D print was small, but also hollow inside, and could float with a single small key on it.
I ended up using this shark key fob for quite a few years before it finally broke.
