A boy’s workbench
Just like a wooden sword, at some point in his life, a boy needs a workbench.
When I was young my dad set up an old workbench for me in his barn for my workbench.
It helped set me on the path of engineering.
Since my sons love to help me in the workshop so much, I had to design one for them.
How to start this project
By figuring out what the problem is that this project is trying to solve, and what features and qualities it needs.
Generally, this means a small list:
- It needs to be comfortable to use
- It needs to be able to clamp stuff to
- It needs to have storage space for tools.
From there on I started sketching.
Bring it to 3D
After the basic design had been “locked down”, the next step was to bring it to 3D.
I used Freecad and spreadsheets to create a parametric model.
By making the model parametric like this I could change the main dimensions and the whole model would update, allowing for truly customized workbenches.
